What am i going to do to take action?
My ultimate purpose of this project is to raise awareness, in those around me, of how prevalent and how severe eating disorders are. In order to do so, I need to reach out to young adolescents around me at school and in my community. I've brain stormed several ideas to take action, they include: a Twitter page devoted to eating disorder awareness, a facebook page doing the same thing, a presentation to classmates, and working with the school psychologist, Mrs. Ivy, to work with kids suffering from eating disorders.
After a lot of thought, I've decided to join a classmate in creating an action plan because our projects coordinate with each other. My classmate, Hannah Conway, is doing her project on sexual abuse and she intends to raise awareness of it as well. Since many of those suffering from eating disorders also suffer from some type of sexual abuse we thought it would be a good idea to work together to raise awareness of both factors. In order to do so, we will meet with a school guidance counselor, the principal, and possibly a guest speaker to discuss a good time to make our presentation. On December 16, we plan to visit Castleton State College to speak with Amy Bremel on our topics and possibly get a guest speaker through her connections with the college. If all goes as hoped, during our meeting with Amy Bremel we will be able to have a guest speaker join us for our presentation to give our classmates an outside source.
As far as the presentation, we plan to do it during a FLEX Block, which is a block of time for all students to do homework or get assistance in one of their classes. The presentation, we hope, will be mandatory for all seniors considering they are about to go off into a new place and we want them to be aware of such things as sexual assault and eating disorders which often times occur more so in college than in high school. For our presentation, we will introduce both of our STEM projects through a combined slideshow that provides the audience with the background of our topics, why our topics are a concern to these students, and what our intentions are through the presentation, then we will briefly introduce our speaker. If we are not able to get a speaker from Castleton we might have the health teacher, Mrs. Lawrence come in, or possibly a psychiatrist that specializes in these two topics. By the closing of our project we intend to have made all seniors well aware of the dangers that lurk in the open world, which may ultimately make those students more cautious and perhaps will decrease the chance of eating disorders or sexual assaults occurring in those students' lives. In addition, hopefully this eye opener will help students assist friends of theirs or family members of theirs that have suffered, or still are suffering, from an instance of sexual abuse or the development of an eating disorder.
